The team behind Jobusy, namely Russell Grant and Bradley Kirshenbaum, joined forces with photographer Chris Saunders, to answer a brief for The Gauteng Tourism authority.

If you live in the province you are a GeePee, a term born out of the iconic number plates of the province. This video was produced in a matter of days, in order to to be ready for a live national broadcast unvieling the campaign.

As the project comes to a successful close, its important that the content produced is remembered and archived. Below are the video produced during my time in the construction site, as well as important discoveries and moments shared.

"The Band rehearsal room is ready"

Every now and again, you meet someone amazing. Someone who, although only having known a short period of time, feels like a life long friend. Eric, has that charm. It feels like he’s been with us for years, watching us grow up, and being there to see the building develop into something truly great. Eric came at a time when much explaining needed to be done. People are still learning what is where, and what is what. He’s there with a smile, and he’s there with a wisdom and dignity I discover everyday. Shake his hand, talk to him, listen to him talk.

Just thought I’d share this image with you. I took on my way back from The Troyeville Hotel. Apart from some colour tweaks, this is exactly what the sunshine was doing to the Main Street Life sign. We had actually walked to The Troyeville, so it was a pretty big occasion. It was very similar to the time a few of us walked to Ghandi Square, or to The Top of The Cartlon. We actually have that city life, the one we dreamed of where we can walk about…we just didn’t know it.

I wrote about this video months ago, and now its finally here. This is video for Maraza and Bobzin Dash feat Kay Soul that was shot right here in Main Street Life, back in the day when it was still a complete construction site, sans yours truly.

Chalkboard opens it’s doors

2011 saw the opening of Chalkboard, the Red Team Go business by The Bioscope’s Darryl Els and Russell Grant. The two teamed up with Mpho Masango to put the cafe together. Geared up to be ideal of business and networking, the cafe is surrounded by chalkboards that are there for anything from strategy meetings in a new and original environment, to general doodling in cafe with good quality take way food.

In the December edition of South Africa’s GQ, Red Team Go founder Russell Grant made the list, amongst others, in a celebration of cool. Others in the list include other musicians like Mpumi Mcata from the Blk Jks, photographer Liam Lynch. Grant, dubbed as a “creative entrepreneur” was applauded for his work on the marking of Main Street Life, the project of which named Main Street Life .TV has its own writing and explanation here.

Other reasons mentioned included the formation of The Bioscope, a Red Team Go project done alongside Darryl Els. The infamous Noodlebox Cinema nights get a mention.

16mm launches at The Bioscope

16mm is a new concept to have launched at The Bioscope, the independent cinema located in downtown Johannesburg. Bioscope founders Darryl Els and Russell Grant discovered an old cinema located close by called the Thari cinema. When there they got to know the owner Charles, and discovered his collection of old 16mm prints. charles is also in possession of a working 16mm project.

The Orange Hats in New York

Red Team Go is proud to be affiliated with The Orange Hats. red Team Go founder Russell Grant met with Ben Lundberg during his visit to South Africa last year. The project, originally concieved and tested during The Grahamstown Arts Festival, sounded exciting and different.

“How can we help?” Grant said. The result? Lundberg returned to New York whereby he now drives and runs the project in its entirety. Red Team Go has come on board to simply help wherever possible, starting with the registration, development, and hosting of www.theorangehats.com

Main Street Life .TV Launches Lets Go Ride Bikes

The vision behind Main Street Life .TV was always to use members of the building to create content. The plan was to always have it be fun micro publishing projects, that engage with the city of Johannesburg, as well as promote the lifestyle one has inside Main Street Life. Lets Go Ride Bikes is about using the bicycles available on the ground floor of Main Street Life, and other writers and photographers inside the building, to document little adventures on bike rides through the city on weekends.

Building The Bioscope

After years of planning, it all came down to a couple of weeks. The Bioscope has just opened its doors to the public, and the moment was met with a big sigh of relief. A relief that that craziness of the past few weeks was over, and a relief that it has now been done. Many have tried, many have gotten quite far, but none had managed to do it.

Johannesburg now has its own independent art house and cultural cinema. Something every major city should have, but Johannesburg didn’t. Perfectly positioned in downtown Johannesburg, on the ground floor of Main Street Life, another site that Red Team Go is heavily involved in through Main Street Life .TV

As a project now, the space needs to just grow into itself. Both myself (Russell) and The Bioscope co Founder Darryl Els need to just refine our systems and practices so that project can grow steadily. The excitement of Main Street Life, and the every growing Maboneng Precinct were key in making the project happen. Now, it just comes down to the love and excitement we have for independent cinema, and a little bit of that good old fashioned grease you get coming out of your elbow.

The Frown Before the Sun Sets

Before the Sun Sets is one of the first online TV shows to have been made in Main Street Life, a unique creative building located on the east side of Johannesburg city. the series sees artists come up to the roof of Main Street Life, and perform one song live, as the sun sets over the city behind them. The series started with Gary Thomas, but only once you repeat it can you really start calling it a series. The show was developed for Main Street Life .TV , the online media channel set up by Red Team Go for the building.
This second video is one of the first appearances of The Frown, a group only recently formed here in South Africa. Font lady of The Frown, Eve Rakow was part of Love on Rollerskates, an early Red Team Go project, and has always remained somewhat involved in the Red Team Go network ever since.
